We’re incredibly proud to share that our brand new Sule Skerry Gin, the latest creation from The Orkney Gin Company, has been named Best Contemporary Gin at the prestigious Gin Guide Awards 2025.
Now in its ninth year, The Gin Guide Awards are globally respected for their rigorous blind tasting process and expert judging panel. Featuring entries from over 30 countries, the awards celebrate the very best in gin craftsmanship, innovation, and flavour. To win a category is no small feat — and Sule Skerry’s recognition highlights the exceptional quality and character of this new expression.

But what exactly is a Contemporary Gin? Unlike traditional London Dry gins, which are strongly juniper-led, Contemporary gins explore a more creative balance of botanicals. Sule Skerry Gin fits perfectly here — while juniper is still present, it’s complemented by vibrant notes of orange zest, nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon, giving it a warming, citrus-spiced profile with a smooth, gently caramelised finish reminiscent of craft cola.

Inspired by the isolated Sule Skerry lighthouse and the wild seascapes of Orkney, the gin is not just a tasty treat. Its bespoke bottle, designed by company founder Gary and his daughter Erin, draws from traditional Orkney glassware and features intricate embossing, a golden ‘selkie wife’ coin, and stunning artwork that showcases solan birds, mystical folklore, and dramatic Orkney skies.
Originally launched as Craft Gin Club’s Gin of the Month in January 2025, Sule Skerry Gin has already captured the hearts of gin lovers across the UK, scoring highly in CGC's member surveys — and now it has a major award to match.
Sule Skerry Tasting Notes
Nose: The aroma opens with a burst of fresh citrus, primarily orange zest, complemented by warm spices like nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon.
Palate: On the palate, the gin presents a juniper-forward profile, enriched by the aforementioned unique botanics. The addition of a gently caramelised finish introduces a smooth, almost buttery note, reminiscent of craft cola, adding depth and complexity.
Finish: The finish is long, with the beautiful citrus zestiness lingering pleasantly, leaving a subtle sweetness that balances the dryness of the gin.
Serving Suggestions
Sule Skerry Gin shines in classic serves like the gin and tonic. Pairing it with an artisanal tonic water, such as Hartridges Indian Tonic, can enhance its flavours. For a more adventurous cocktail, consider mixing it into a gin-based negroni or a spiced gin fizz to highlight its unique botanical profile.

Interestingly, just as crafting an award-winning gin like Sule Skerry Gin requires precision, attention to detail, and a controlled environment, ensuring safety and efficiency in scientific and industrial spaces demands a similarly meticulous approach. While the artistry of gin blending depends on careful measurement, hygiene, and consistent processes, laboratories also rely heavily on controlled conditions to maintain the integrity of experiments and results. This connection highlights the importance of the physical environment—not just in beverage production but across all precision-focused industries.
For instance, in distilleries, hygiene and controlled access to production areas are paramount to prevent contamination and ensure consistent flavor profiles. Similarly, in scientific research facilities, a laboratory door serves as the first line of defense in maintaining safety, cleanliness, and…
